Board of Directors

The North Shore Tennis Society is governed by a volunteer Board, elected by the Society’s Members.

Duncan Brown

President

Background:

I have extensive leadership, governance and administration experience in national and global unions, multi-stakeholder industry organizations, pension and benefit plans and charitable organizations. I am also experienced in planning, leading and assessing strategic projects and campaigns. I recently completed a six-year term as a member of the Capilano University Board of Governors, where I served as Board Chair, Chair of several Board committees and as liaison to the University Senate, which is responsible for academic affairs.

Why I'm Involved

I took up tennis five years ago, taking a beginner’s course at the North Vancouver Tennis Centre. I soon fell in love with tennis, and now play several days a week at the Tennis Centre and on outdoor, public courts across the North Shore. I am a member of STANS, and also play with the many new friends I have made in the local tennis community. We have some awesome tennis facilities here on the North Shore, but the number and quality of outdoor courts has been declining due to development, pickleball conversion, poor maintenance and the closure of school courts. And, the wonderful Tennis Centre is over capacity. I want to help build the voice of the tennis community to ensure that our needs and concerns are heard by our local governments, to improve the maintenance and playability of courts, stop the decline and loss of courts and creating more opportunities for year-round tennis.

Marcus Shapiro

Vice President

Background:

I immigrated to West Vancouver from London, England in 2014 following a career as a corporate lawyer and mergers and acquisitions advisor. Currently I assist various local companies with their growth plans and have served as a Trustee of the West Vancouver Library and a Director of the West Vancouver Library Foundation. In my spare time I sell safaris and similar exotic experiences for Sikeleli Travel & Adventures.

Why I'm Involved

I was invited to join the Board of the Society in 2020 and oversaw the revamping of the constitution and adoption of the new name; and as the only West Vancouver-resident Board member at the time, I initiated the engagement with District of West Vancouver and arranged the first survey of West Vancouver public courts. Serving as Vice President of the Society, I have been active in the “political” machinations, as well as playing as much leisure tennis as possible including for the Society and with STANS.

Paddy McCann

Secretary

Background:

I worked for several years as a General Manager in the manufacturing industry, and am currently working as a Business Consultant and Project Manager helping businesses through technology selection and transformations. I have been playing tennis for five years and regularly play at the North Vancouver Tennis Centre and outdoor courts across the North Shore, as well as playing in several competitive tournaments throughout the summer.

Why I'm Involved

I joined the board last year to promote tennis and assist the Tennis Society with their technological needs, such as managing the website and membership database, communications, and surveys.

Cathy Still

Vice President

Background:

I started playing tennis at the Capilano Winter Club, played at the North Shore Winter Club and most recently with STANS. I have enjoyed a long career in West Vancouver working with adolescents, both as a teacher and as a counsellor. I served as a member and chair of the North Shore Youth and Family Court Committee who were responsible for opening the North Shore Youth Safe House and for hosting the Annual Provincial Youth and Family Court Conference. Since retiring, I have been a volunteer with the North Shore Multicultural Society, the STANS Board and now on the North Shore Tennis Society.

Why I'm Involved

Cathy continues to advocate for tennis as a lifelong sport. We are so fortunate to have great public indoor and outdoor tennis facilities on the North Shore. We are most thankful to our predecessors on the North Vancouver Tennis Society who were essential in the development of the North Vancouver Tennis Centre.

Michael Anderson

Past President, Treasurer

Background:

I have owned and operated a commercial real estate brokerage since 1999 and have been a soccer and baseball player my entire life. I moved to North Vancouver from Tsawwassen in 2009 and my wife Gloria invited me about 4 years ago to play Tennis with her new pals on the North Shore. I became immersed into the sport and the people who play it. After joining STANS, I was asked to help and join the Society’s Board to advocate and help with the effort to stand up for tennis on the North Shore on behalf of public tennis players and help build a stronger voice for the tennis community.

Why I'm Involved

I’ve got plenty of energy and passion left to help build on the great work by our past boards. There is no limit as to what a group can do when, to coin a phrase, they use a full volley. Tennis players and their families deserve to be counted and respected and I want to help keep tennis great on the North Shore. Plus, I get to shout “Let’s Rally for Tennis!”

Kristin Ames

Board Member

Background:

My name is Kristin and I’m a lifelong resident of the North Shore, currently residing in the McCartney Park area. I started playing tennis at the North Vancouver Tennis Center about 5 years ago and fell in love with the sport. As a Nutrition and Fitness coach, I am busy running my online coaching business, as well as fulfilling my part-time role at Hollyburn Country Club as their Performance Nutrition Coach. I also have an extensive background in finance and tech from my previous career as the controller at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club.

Why I'm Involved

We are fortunate to have access to such a great infrastructure of courts here on the North Shore, and my hope is to advocate for the preservation and expansion of our court system with the local municipalities. I would also love to create more events to unite the tennis community across the North Shore and help to grow both the profile and membership of the North Shore Tennis Society.

Curtis Austin

Board Member

Background:

My venture into the tennis world started when I was young, at 15. I was appointed Head Coach at Kirby Tennis Club in the UK, and at 16 I became one of the youngest LTA Level 3 certified coaches in Britain. During this time, I was a member of the club Board, and thoroughly enjoyed lobbying for better facilities, fundraising, and finding creative ways to increase membership. I am currently the CEO and Founder of CJ Tennis Coaching Inc. (est. 2020), a North Shore based tennis company that offers private lessons, indoor kids’ programs in Edgemont Village, tournaments, and school programs to our local community.

Why I'm Involved

I am passionate about increasing participation for people of all ages on the North Shore. It has been frustrating to see many local courts in poor condition, or even being destroyed for housing (including my home court on Lonsdale/21st). This has motivated me to join the growing voice of our amazing local tennis community, helping to keep facilities open and thriving for our generation, and future generations to come.

William Hamson-Wong

Board Member

Background:

I am a former Volunteer Vancouver Board of Directors Trainer and a former Board Chair for the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies of BC. I know that volunteer boards can make a real difference and I am happy to contribute where I can. I started playing tennis a few years back in answer to a question I had asked myself, “what sport can I play well into my old age, that would allow me to stay active, fuel my competitive juices and would be super fun to play?” I presently run a school for high performing athletes, and the sarcastic answer that came from one of the high school students when I posed this question to them was “lawn bowling”. And the next answer was even worse… one sarcastic student guessed “BINGO” – an answer that filled the entire class with laughter. The real answer of course is “tennis”, and though it is a very brief love affair that came late in life for me, it has turned into a true passion. There are some days when I play 3 or 4 matches in a day, and one day where I actually played 8 hours of tennis in a single day – so yes, beyond a passion, you might say it has turned into a full-scale obsession! Lucky for me, there seems to be a very vibrant tennis culture here on the North Shore, and as one who has worked and travelled all over the world, I truly feel like this is now home, and tennis is MY SPORT.

Why I'm Involved

I hope to nurture the already thriving tennis culture here on the North Shore. As I look at the activities of the North Shore Tennis Society, from the advocacy for the provision of public courts, to the promotion of tennis in aid of a healthy lifestyle, to the ambassador program for keeping courts well-kept, to the inaugural tournament in which I was a happy participant (and proud winner!) I am so grateful for the truly great work that has been done by the NSTS. So, when I was asked by two of the members of NSTS to join, there was really no way to say “no”! My primary goal in my first year of service is to be of some use to the board, and to faithfully execute all projects I am directed to take on! Additionally, I plan to keep my ears open, to learn about the issues that are important for the members of our wonderful tennis community, and to be a strong advocate for tennis on the North Shore.

Sonya Klassen

Board Member

Background:

I am originally from Edmonton, moved to Vancouver in 1987 and have called it home ever since. In my youth, I loved team sports and played softball, basketball and volleyball. From my 20’s onwards, I worked in the consulting engineering field as a computer-aided design draftsperson and department administrator and continued to play the sports mentioned. Within the different companies I worked for, I had many opportunities to spread my wings in different volunteer activities such as the annual United Way fundraiser, organizing employee social events and managing a company Dragonboat team (even paddling with them, too). I met my husband through work. Once we started our family, I chose to step away from the engineering world and devote my time in a different “work” environment. In addition to raising two kids, I was fully involved throughout their elementary and high school years by volunteering on the PAC in numerous roles and ending only when the youngest child graduated. As with most schools, there are a great variety of fundraisers. Given my organizational and motivational skills this usually meant I was leading groups of volunteers to run these fundraisers along with organizing and managing the volunteer parent’s scheduling. After ten years, I did get back into the consulting engineering world, continued to be involved with volunteer activities at the schools as well as within the office until retiring 7 years ago. I put away the volunteer hat and discovered new passions – growing hoyas, owning an Italian greyhound and playing tennis, a game that I never considered playing before.

Why I'm Involved

Tennis has become my passion. This sport has been the one thing that gets me off the couch, continues to improve my fitness level, keeps me limber, motivates me and has the additional benefit of plenty of socialization with a great group of like-minded people! Growing up in Edmonton’s long and cold winters, I did not have access to tennis as you needed to be a club member to play indoors, clubs were far and few and it was beyond my parents’ budget. Having the accessibility to the North Shore’s outdoor tennis courts and the indoor covered courts at the North Shore Tennis Centre allows me to play the game all year round. I want to continue to support the growth of this sport and encourage its access to all people. The more I play, the more I learn about what is all involved to allow the residents the accessibility to this sport on the North Shore. We don’t know how lucky we are to have what we have and I want to learn more to help support the network of people who work hard behind the scenes. Thus, being part of the NSTS board would be a step in the right direction for me to help advocate for our public courts and work to find solutions for their future needs.

Jodi Pallan

Board Member

Background:

Hi. My name is Jodi. My family and I have been residents in Ambleside, West Vancouver for the past 17 years. About 9 years ago, I took tennis lessons on a whim via a West Vancouver Community Center adult lesson program. Those lessons sparked my love & passion for the sport. I have continued to pursue learning & playing tennis in our community ever since. I am an active member of the WV Tennis Club and current captain for one of our WV club ladies league teams. Tennis has given me a great connection to my community and the friends I have made on and off the court over the years.

Why I'm Involved

I truly believe in making sport available to all in our community and look forward to working with & being part of the NS Tennis Society in their mission to be aware of the needs of the tennis-playing community and support and encourage the growth of tennis in our community for players of all levels.

Ron Stuber

Board Member

Background:

I practiced corporate law for over 25 years, mostly as a Partner in various international law firms, both in Canada and the UK. My focus was advising on the development and financing of large, capital-intensive projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors. I have always enjoyed recreational sports as a great outlet for exercise, stress management and general well-being. I started playing tennis in my teens and have played on and off throughout my life. Over the last few years, I have become involved in various games on the North Shore and often just go out to hit on our local public courts (weather permitting).

Why I'm Involved

I was asked by an existing Board member to consider serving on the Board. I would like to work with like-minded persons in the tennis community who want to see improved infrastructure and opportunities for tennis players on the North Shore.

Farid Vahedi

Board Member

Background:

With tennis and alpine sports as my top sporting passions, I embarked on my tennis journey in teen ages, dedicating myself to honing my skills for professional competitions. This path of athletic excellence ran parallel to my academic pursuits in mechanical engineering and computer science, reflecting the dual facets of my interests. Eventually, I made the conscious decision to prioritize my education over sports, leading to my current career as a lecturer-researcher specializing in energy systems. Five years ago, I relocated from Switzerland to North Vancouver, and tennis seamlessly integrated into my life. This transition brought me into the welcoming embrace of a vibrant tennis community that values professional leisure, motivation, and the joy of pursuing well-being. Being a part of this community in North Shore extends far beyond tennis, encompassing health, friendships, and the unbreakable bonds of athleticism. Together, we champion the spirit of tennis while forging connections that transcend the court.

Why I'm Involved

Tennis is more than just a sport; it’s a bond that promotes a healthy lifestyle, respect, and sportsmanship. My involvement in the North Shore tennis community drives my board service ambition. Observing the passion of players of all ages, their dedication, and the role of tennis in fostering a healthier society is inspiring. We must preserve our facilities and advocate for additional resources to serve this thriving community year-round.
